| Dissatisfied
with Mexican rule in 1846, a group of American settlers seized
the area around Sonoma and proclaimed an independent California
Republic. Their flag was hoisted on June 14, 1846 and flew until
July 9 when American troops occupied the area and declared it
part of the United States. The native grizzly bear was added at
the suggestion of Henry L. Ford. The exact details of this flag
are uncertain since the original was lost in the San Francisco
fire of 1906. |
